Bastard Bastard Bastard – ‘DIYing To Live’

“It would be wise to put the weapon down.”

“Who the fuck is this asshole.”

(Both pertinent questions on the meaning of life)

“Please refrain from using any more obscenities in the presence of these people.”

What follows is thrash guitar, hardcore vocals, speed metal- Hey, this band tags say it’s punk, speed, thrash, metal,Buffalo? Must mean they’re Canadians in disguise, perpetrating our borders to indoctrinate our livestock into lactose intolerant terrorism. Buffalo?- hardcore punk covered by ten feet of snow.

This is thrash/metal/hardcore/punk thrust down your gullet, your throat, your gut, caressing your soul and hitting true and hard and pure and right into your heart. That means, I think, I think it’s a really great song.

“Leg Raise” starts with three chords, three notes ringing while the drums rolls and rolls its life away. When it finally subsides, a backwards Black Sabbath riff appears with venomous vocals vomiting onto the forefront and foreskin of your mind, meaning- onto the nice mauve carpet in the recreation room. There’s a metal breakdown that coincides with your nervous breakdown as it melds into the next part. And as it melts inside your brain, and into the dashboard of your car with its sleek upholstery and power disc brakes.

“Piss on your memory/Piss on your grave,” the grinding metal part takes turns with the double-time hardcore meaning- this is punch drunk punk pulverizing at all ports; this is “Hot Legs” by Rod Stewart in a different time zone kickin’ your bloody arse through the goal posts!

“And that someone who is bored is asleep and someone who is bored will not say no.” Some Clash-like chords explode bouncing off a long corridor of sound whilst the song “Minimum Rage” finally comes in. The vocals alternate with early English punk style and later hardcore diatribe. “My pay is minimum, my rage is maximum,” is how the chorus converges with the tight rhythm section with the staccato chords. I know the balance of effort and pay is quite eschew. And I know this deserves more credit than the masses entitle it to.

This song is a venomous, volatile rant. This is powerful and passionate. This band encapsulates punk, hardcore and freedom. And they, more importantly, encapsulate passion, fury, integrity and noise. They are the musical equivalent of a cheese enchilada with mole sauce and if you knew me more intimately, you would know, that this is my highest praise.

The final selection for your listening pleasure is a cover song. No, it’s not originally done by Dave Matthew or Phish, surprisingly enough. But it is
originally done by my favorite hardcore band of all time- Minor Threat.

And though they sing, “I don’t want to hear it,” -I do, and what I hear is so beautiful it’s as if a dozen doves from heaven descended upon my ears encouraging me with sweet cooing to embrace the music, to live in peace and love, to accept life as a puzzle I can’t quite figure out, as a quote I find too oblique, as a peanut butter jar I am unable to open.

That’s all well and good, you say, but I…

I do want to hear it and what I hear sounds great.

I wanna hear Bastard Bastard Bastard soon soon soon again. I think they’re great, great, great. And excuse me if I stutter but this disc just knocked my mind for a loop and I’m inclined to encourage you to let it knock your block around the clock as often as humanly possible. And to commence in doing so, immediately.
