BY THE THROAT / ONE GOOD NIGHT
By The Throat is a band that grabs you and don’t let go till you scream, “Bloody Murder!” It’s also a hardcore band that’s influenced by the early ones, (like Black Flag, Bad Brains, Foreigner) but they don’t get stuck in the redo/retro groove as some others. Their stuff is raw, now, and it matters.
“Break Away” is the first song and with its fast galloping beat signifies that the horses have been left out of the gate and you know you’re in for a wild ride. Soon after the lead guitar starts going haywire setting up the singer for his plea, “Hate myself for what I do/Hate myself for hating myself/ Now what am I gonna do?” Well, what the answer seems to be is make a killer ep, have guitars slicing in with detonating explosions, rhythms-always fast, but not strictly hardcore, (stopping to change the tempo to take a breathe or sip a beer), and have the bass pounding, vocals expounding and intense too feeble a word to express it all.
It ends with “Nowhere To Hide” which I mistakenly hoped would be a Supremes cover (Editors note: That’s “Nowhere To Run”) but I’m consoled by the fact that it seems to be two great songs in one.
All in all, a great little taste of a band that wants to have fun and is not afraid to pulverize your brain into the cement for you to enjoy it, too.
