See This World – “The Future is 2020”

See? This band is See This World.

See? I’ve been meaning to tell you about them.

They’ve traveled far from across the sea just to bring their music to us.

Well, I see you see right through me. Actually, they’re from Boston but I’m pretty sure they’ve been to Nantasket beach before.

And all their songs are played in the key of C.

(Editor’s note: Anyone can see this is a lie.)

But if you can see it in your heart to listen with your ears to this modern hardcore punk, I think you’ll really enjoy it. And see that I’m a man of my words.

Let’s see how you like them and I’ll see if I can lay of the bad puns:

“The Future is 2020- Reality” is the first song on this release and it’s also my favorite. Though the vocals have a hardcore delivery they contain a catchy, strong melody within them. “What’s your reality? Be that reality. Live your reality…Who’s to say whose gone insane?”

This song just whizzes along nicely with one measures forceful accents sounding effectively, like nails being driven into a board. There’s a terrific breakdown part with the words- “Crazy, they call me crazy…they drive me crazy.” You must be crazy and you can’t be for real if you’re not crazy about this song.

“The Sky” is a hard, aggressive tune that might give the feeling of an infant throwing a tantrum with it’s pounding beat and screaming vocals. But I’d like to think of it more as an action painting artist, wildly throwing paint expressively onto a canvas. “The sky is falling down …Just take a look around…It’s scattered on the ground- Look out!”

These are the complete lyrics. So is this really a long, lost Ramones song done heavy hardcore style? But really, this song verges upon power violence, a style that I think is great, much like this song is.

After a nice, motivating, echoey drum intro, “Run” takes off with a driving beat and an “in your face”, repetitive vocal backed by some rockin’, chuggin’ rhythm guitar. “You learn to crawl, you learn to walk, you learn to talk, you learn to run. Now, you better keep running.” My ears want to rush towards songs as good as this one.

After a growling, guitar riff that sounds more like an angry lion being awakened, “Sea Out” ignites with an angry, punk singer, snarling and singing these words. “Brick by brick, they’re all idiots. Can’t see beyond their own fingertips…Can’t see beyond their own stupid shit.”

This tune has a fiery, ferocious energy inside it that is as exciting as it is intense. “You build a wall around you, now you can’t get out… Now you can’t see out.” This song may or may not be about the Trump followers but I know for sure that this is one helluva song.

I love the song “Travel Well” as it’s a bit different from the rest of the songs on this release. Maybe you could call it their “chill out” number. It starts out pretty quiet until the neat, industrial guitars appear. And then Dave’s vocals come in, which somehow makes me think of John Lydon with P.I.L., though Dave’s vocals are much more melodic. “When your time has come, as it does for everyone…Travel well my friend, until we meet again”

In the very last seconds of this song, the screaming hardcore vocals burst in, not so much in a disruptive way but more like a not expected but welcomed visitor. Now that I think of it- I hear a bit of Bauhaus in here as well. But actually, this is quite an original song and an excellent one. And is my second favorite tune on this release.

You may question why 2020 is in the title instead of 2021? In an interview with Dave Tree, the singer of this band, he explained it was supposed to come out last year but with all the complications with covid it has taken until now. They had been hoping to have a record release show but, obviously, that’s not happening.

But See This World has been Dave Tree’s latest musical project for a while now, and even if they’re not as well-known as Dave’s previous band- Tree, they certainly always deliver great songs with great performances and great production.

As I see that is the case here.

(Editor’s note: Oh, no here we go again).

And Dave’s also happens to be a great, visual artist as well. In fact, I would say he is my favorite local artist.

But check this out, I feel this release is local heavy hardcore at its very best.

See if you agree with me….

See ya.
