The Down And Outs – “You Probably Downloaded This EP”

A few weeks back TNB found themselves at the Fete Lounge in Providence, RI for a tour kickoff show for OC45. One of the bands also playing that afternoon was a group out of Cumberland, RI known as, The Down And Outs.

Right from the get go, these guys caught our attention and held on until we were screaming for more (luckily we brought a change of clothes). They play an edgy style of skate punk that consists of high speed hardcore rhythms and guitar riffs put to a melodic backdrop. Sort of like, The Beach Boys meets Jimmy Eat World while getting BF’ed by The Dickies (stay tuned for the visual later).

For me, The Down And Outs were really the highlight of the afternoon. They were fun, energetic and had a great rapport with the crowd. Several of the band members spent a good portion of the set groovin’ in the mosh pit below the stage. When their set was over, we were lucky enough to meet the band (consisting of Paul on vocals and guitar, Tripp on guitar, Jayson on bass and Adam on drums) and scoff a copy of their latest EP called, “You Probably Downloaded This EP”.

The EP contains 5 very cool tunes, all of which are filled with high speed energy, excitement and fun. If you’re a music enthusiast that likes hardcore rhythms, but prefers a bit more melody, then The Down And Outs are definitely a band worth checking out. Here are a couple of tunes from the EP to whet your appetite.

The 1st song on the EP is called, “50 Years of 9 to 5” and will give you a good idea what this band is all about. Filled with lamentings of a monotonous 9 to 5 life style, the tune exhibits good buzz saw guitar action and a high speed pace blended with melodic vocals and choruses. Have a listen.

The last song on the EP is called, “Derail” is arguably my favorite tune. It has a bit more of a straight ahead hardcore feel that hits a chord with my purist hardcore heart. The trademark skate punk melodies are still front and center, as well as tandem shout choruses and lots of buzz saw guitar licks. Check it out.

Regardless of whether you skateboard or not, if you like high energy, exciting tunes, then “You Probably Downloaded This EP” is certainly worth the download. And be sure to check out The Down And Outs live; you will definitely have a good time.

Later,
