The Noise Floor presents – “DMANCY UNCHAINED VOL. 1”

A compilation with Constable, Damn Broads!, The Four Point Restraints, More Beer Please, Oh The Humanity!, RF30, Tragwag, The Hideout, The Trans Fats, Midnight Saints, OC45, The Balls.

So I was handed this CD compilation by a very shady character last Saturday night at the Midway. She mentioned something about “The Katy Perry Fan Club” but then slipped away into the shadows before I caught more than a glimpse.

So I did some investigative work on my part. It seems this compilation is from an independent punk radio station manned by Mr. Mancy and John Wayne Swayze that’s called The Noise Floor. Its damn broadcasts go on every Wednesday night and they’re on facebook and youtube as well. Also, you can get this CD at noisefloorradio.bandcamp.com

This CD has 24 songs by 12 bands, each doing between one and three songs. I can’t say I like every song or even every band on this compilation, but I can say there’s a lot of great bands and great music on this CD.

Damn Broads are an all-girl hardcore band from Connecticut. The boys should take a lesson from these dames and do the same thing. They happen to be my favorite band on our site. (Oh, I wish we had Phish). “CTCP” is one of my favorite songs by them from their great CD “Loud, Fast And In The Dark.” This song is an ode to the Connecticut punk scene and has a great unison sung chorus. Here are some lyrics from the verse: “We may be small but man we’re proud/ We play our music fast and loud/ And even if you think we’re wrong/ Connecticut chaos punks stay strong.”

“Fall Out” by More Beer Please is the next selection. I’m horrified to admit that they named themselves after hearing my pathetic, tearful pleas after closing time at The Midway. They are a very good punk band that we don’t get to see much. This is a roaring hardcore tune with an almost metal guitar sequence and echoing background vocals- an excellent tune.

RF30 is a New Hampshire band that mixes punk and hardcore with reggae and ska and often in the same tune. This song is a good example as it starts with a chord passage that could have come from an old Dead Boys or Dictators song but then changes into a ska/reggae beat. I think this tune, “Taco Bell X-Box” alternates between the two styles quite well.

The Trans Fats are a skate punk band from Providence that sounds like Bad Brains jamming with Motorhead. They are my favorite band from Rhode Island but I was unfamiliar with this song, “Carve The Break.” This is another slashing, driving song from them with a great, propulsive rhythm section, probably my favorite hardcore singer on our site and a metal-ish staccato guitar line dropping in unexpectedly every now and then. Aggressive, inventive and passionate- that’s how these boys roll

Midnight Saints are my favorite band from Vermont on our site. Well, we don’t have any other (Oh, I wish we had Phish) but they are a creative, energetic hardcore band nonetheless. “RPD” (Rare Porpoise Dung) has sampled sound bites, gargled screams, changing tempos that still keep the hardcore feeling, intact- a great tune.

OC45 is now a Boston based pop/punk band and one of the best practitioners (Where do I come up with these words?) of their style on our site. They’re always ready to mix some bile and passion along with the melody and beat. “New War” is one of their more rough edged songs off their excellent CD, “Class & Cruelty”. My favorite part is towards the end where the rhythm guitar’s energy sounds like it’s about to skip off the albums grooves.

It says that all proceeds from this CD go directly to financing the radio show. If they play songs like this they certainly deserve your support. Better they have your dollars than the musicians who will just piss it all away on beer.

(It’s 2 am. at The Midway and I’m in a crumbled mess beneath the bar-stools. As tears roll down my cheeks I mutter an insistent cry of “more beer, more beer, please).
