Abject! – “Try Again”

A few weeks ago TNB attended yet another great hardcore/metal show at the Midway Cafe in Jamaica Plain. This time is was Boston’s own, The Enemy Within, pulling together a ruckus lineup of bands/friends intent on smashing our sensibilities into smithereens. The show was awesome, to say the least and, as usual, The Enemy Within delivered the goods.

The highlight of the show came when a 5-piece band out of Brooklyn, NY singed the stage with their potent brand of traditional, NY-style hardcore. The band, called Abject!, adds to an ever growing list of NY hardcore bands TNB has had the great pleasure of experiencing over the last few years. The NY hardcore scene, started by the likes of Agnostic Front, Sick Of It All and Murphy’s Law (to name a few), thankfully endures to the present day in the hands of younger bands like, Live Fast Die Fast, Downlow and Abject!. Long live NYHC!

As their facebook profile asserts, Abject! plays old school hardcore that your older brother listened to, that your mom is afraid of and your dad wont allow in the house. And as you’ll soon hear, Abject! plays music with a lot of attitude and a lot of style. The dudes that make it all happen are Jamie “Hamma 1” Kenobi on vocals, “Mattakins” on angry guitar, ” Spew” on bitter guitar, “Chucky Brown” on gangsta bass guitar and “Shuffles” on angry drums.

Back in March of 2012, Abject! self-released their debut full-length CD called, “Try Again”, which contains 10 great tracks to keep your hardcore juices flowing. And since I know your all chomping at the bit to have a listen, let’s dive head long into the moshpit and listen to a few great tracks right now.

The first track on the CD called, “Ass Backwards”, starts out with a slow-paced intro to help you gather all your energy for the pending onslaught that soon follows. So get ready. OK, here it comes. The guitars are quickening until … Smash!!! … Yaaaahhhhh!!! … (at this point, you should have lept off the stage head first) … “It makes no sense … you make no sense, ass backwards….”

With spray paint in tow, the secong track, “Crime Related Art”, spews out of the can in true hardcore fashion. Fast, loud and ruckus. Enjoy.

“SUV Tard” provides us with a unique and subtle look into the inner workings of the mind of the prospective SUV buyer. At last revealing their true motives in making such an ostentatious purchase. Who knew.

Great CD, great band. Definitely check them out. And, hopefully, Abject! can make it back to Boston real soon.
