Cancerslug / Terror Rising / Reason To Fight / Gut Bucket / Get The Fear
Midway Cafe Jamaica Plain, MA 4/14/12

The following is what we at TNB call a ‘Timorous Texting’ review. This is where instead of finding a dangerous situation to review a previous show; we find a peaceful, reflective area to conduct this in. We still use the method of texting, though, and today we are in one of my favorite spots – the Japanese rock garden at the Museum of Fine Arts. Remember we are trained professionals so do not try this at home. No sacred Buddhist artifacts, wildlife or washed up ballad singers were harmed in making this review. Please- Sit back and enjoy.

Slimedog- It’s so nice and peaceful sitting here in the Japanese rock garden.

Bang- Yes, but I’m not quite sure what makes this a rock garden?

Slimedog- Don’t you see the AC/DC statues right next to the Buddha ones?

Bang- Oh, yeah. Angus appears to be pissing on that other dude. Not sure who that is.

Slimedog- I believe that is Michael Bolton. Speaking of which, do you remember who was sitting with us at the show?

Bang- Was it Michael Bolton?

Slimedog- No, it was Jenn Jammies. She said we shouldn’t mention her in reviews, though.

Bang- Oh yeah, good thing we didn’t mention her. I remember she gave us ‘Yesterday’s Heroes’ buttons. She’s always very nice to us.

Slimedog- Yes, we won’t talk about her. Did you know she is six feet tall? And Shamus must be six foot ten. The heights they reach in lengths is equal to the heights they reach booking the Midway.

Bang- True, the shows they book are awesome, just like the one we recently saw,

Slimedog- ‘Get The Fear’ was first. What did you think about them?

Bang- I thought they were very sprightly. How about you?

Slimedog- Very good, I’d say they’re a mix of punk and hardcore with a little prog rock added in a good, not bad, way. ‘Gut Bucket’ was next.

Bang- Yes, I was very impressed with ‘Gut Bucket’ (it was his first time seeing them) especially being a three piece with no guitars. Rob on drums is awesome.

Slimedog- I think it works because neither bass is playing normal bass lines, more like two guitar lines, I think. They are good on record but ten times better live. Their humor and arty touches really shine live.

Bang- And then came ‘Reason To Fight’. What a great band and amazing performance.

Slimedog- Agreed, they always deliver. If all bands could play this well without drinking; PBR would be out of business.

Bang- True. Hey, I think Michael Bolton’s statue is giving us the evil eye.

Slimedog- I see a chipmunk molesting his statue, the chip-monk is probably a reincarnated Buddhist monk. What did ya think of ‘Terror Rising’?

Bang- I thought they were very good. Their style was a bit of hardcore/metal crossover, they definitely kept up the energy and excitement.

Slimedog- They terrorized me so much I soiled myself which was very embarrassing. Almost as embarrassing as admitting it now.

Bang- I thought I smelled something foul.

Slimedog- ‘Cancerslug’ was last.

Bang- Based on their name I expected ‘Cancerslug’ to be along the lines of death metal.

Slimedog- They were different, they are from Alabama. They said they play rock and roll but it was more like fifties porn, I mean pop, and they looked like the ‘Cramps’.

Bang- Yes, that about sums them up. Sort of like if Jerry Lee Lewis got rid of his piano and took guitar lessons from Johnny Ramone.

Slimedog- Not bad, but they were my least favorite set of the night. For me my favorite set of the night goes to ‘Gut Bucket’.

Bang- I know what you mean. I think I’d have to give the nod to ‘Reason To Fight’, but all the bands were very good and put on a great show.

Slimedog- Affirmative. Well, let’s leave this peaceful animal debauchery behind. See you back at the Midway.

Bang- Okay, let’s hurry before Mr. Bolton’s statue wants to do a threesome (…versus a duet, of course).
