Drug Shock / Taxi Driver / Live Fast Die Fast / The Enemy Within / Penalty Kill
Midway Cafe, Jamaica Plain, MA 4/27/13

We want to thank Keith Brooks for putting on another great show, one that we consider one of, and maybe the best, show of the year. And even though that’s coming from disreputable sources you’d probably have to agree yourself. What’s a little odd is that two of the musicians, from two different bands, told me later that they were unhappy with their performance that day. This is just another example of how hard these guys try to do their best and put in a lot of hard work into what they do. And this is an example of another reason why they deserve your support.

And this is another highly dangerous dual texting review, conducted live by Andy Bang and Slimedog on death defying trapeze, as the show happens. While we’re happy to risk our own safety, we feel obliged to warn anyone from trying these treacherous maneuvers on their own. Texting should never be done while observing a show. Save that for a more casual time, say when, you’re a juror on an important trial and the judge is instructing you to listen closely to him- Now, here’s where you pull out the cell phone.

So sit back, relax, take a deep breathe, let any flatulence accumulated dissipate freely into the wind and get ready for your mind to experience the roller-coaster of emotions that is known as dual texting.

Slimedog- Where are all the paintings?

Andy- What paintings?

Slimedog- Oh, I’m sorry. Since I became the art critic for TNB I get confused. But the songs by the bands are like paintings with such a wide array of colors. Each strum of a guitar chord is like a stroke from a painter’s brush.

Andy- Hmm, sounds like you stole your kitties’ catnip again.

Slimedog- Actually, this girl made me some mushroom soup and I’m feeling a bit odd. But on with the show. Penalty Kill is approaching the stage.

Andy- I like Penalty Kill. Young, raw Boston hardcore. Lots of good energy. BTW, do you have any more of that soup left.

Slimedog- Yes, I do. Here’s a bowl. These guys are a nice mix of metal and hardcore and are a great start of the day. And I have deja vu so I predict their CD review will be in at the very same time as this review. Now, it’s time for The Enemy Within.

Andy- Every time I see The Enemy Within they seem to be better than the last. Today they are simply awesome.

Slimedog- Great heavy hardcore with some metal influence. They will have an EP coming out on a record label soon. I especially liked the part when the dragonflies flew out of the drummers head.

Andy- Uh…, I must have missed the dragonfly thing. Although I must admit the soup is making my genitals feel a bit strange. Look it’s time for Live Fast Die Fast.

Slimedog- New York’s finest Live Fast Die Fast is indeed taking the stage.

Andy- LFDF is such an awesome band. They always put on a great show. Hey, I see the dragon flies!

Slimedog- Yeah, I caught some of them and put them in the soup-have some more. These guys are pure old school New York hardcore and this is the best I’ve seen them. Their singer, Paul, is one of the best front man that we have on our site. He knows how to work the crowd and I like what he said about the bombings and how New York and Boston people have to stick together.

Andy- Agreed, they’re really good dudes. I’m glad Boston is their home away from home.

Slimedog- The only part I didn’t like was when they melted the stage into the core of the earth. Looks like Taxi Driver is ready to drive.

Andy- Oh, is that what happened? I thought it was my brain that melted, but didn’t want to say anything. Taxi Driver is a formidable Boston hardcore band with a great vibe. They also sport a great front man.

Slimedog- Yes, agreed- he’s the white Vince Wilfork. They play a great mix of street punk, Oi and hardcore with some metal influence as well. I wish you would stop changing your face to a demon and back again; it’s distracting.

Andy- Sorry, I can’t help it. All this hardcore is bringing out my inner demons. Hey, I thought Drug Shock was on the bill. Where are they?

Slimedog- You mean Soup Shock? There they are, I can tell from the singers purple Mohawk. I’m glad mine is lilac today.

Andy- And mine is teal. I’m really looking forward to their set. They always give 110% to every performance.

Slimedog- No metal here, this is old school punk and Oi. They sound great. This is the best I’ve heard them. I think they just barely lose out to LFDF for best set of the day.

Andy- All the bands were amazing this afternoon. What a great show. Maybe the best of the year, so far.

Slimedog- Agreed, and it ended with a great cover of “Search and Destroy” by The Stooges. This was one of the best shows of the year. Do you wanna get another round or are you up for more soup?

Andy- Definitely more soup…
