BURIED IN LEATHER / TENAFLY VIPERS / RED LINE REBELS
Live At O’Briens, Allston MA 3/01
I recently saw a double record release party at O’Briens, which just happens to be the club that is most supportive, I believe, of bands that we support in Boston. But I’ve been illin’ and I order a Narragansett, take a sip and since I haven’t been drinking due to illness the past week or so it doesn’t taste too good to me. I loose track of the can and it seems to wander off. A screwdriver or two will suit me better and it does.
So the Tenafly Vipers play and are they my favorite local band? No, they’re not. Do I like them? Yes, very much. And what I really like about them is their style might be described as metal but they have so much punk, thrash, hardcore and hard rock within them that it’s hard to pinpoint. What I can say is they epitomize (oh, what a fancy word) more than any other local band is what this fuckin’ website represents and that’s a meeting of all these styles together in what I term “Heavy Music.” And I will say if you like any or all of these forms of music then you should, (even a fuckin’ idiot like myself does), appreciate them.
Now, Buried In Leather is a punk band and the hardcore punk vibe is there in spades but half the time I’m thinking I’m watching Blue Oyster Cult on angel dust. And I’m not sure if that means Blue Oyster Cult is on angel dust or that I’m watching the band Blue Oyster Cult while I’m on angel dust or both. It’s just such a fuckin’ disconcerting mindfuck that when the lead singer is lying on his back on the stage in between songs moaning about working at the Harvard Library or it’s just maybe I imagined this and a rhinoceros on fire is parading through the door with me riding him with my cock intact.
Well, I don’t know what to say to that but this band rocks, it rules, they kick ass and is one of the better bands in Boston to appreciate. And you don’t have to do angel dust (though it helps) or be sick and drinking screwdrivers (though it helps) or fucking enraged fiery rhinoceros while riding them bareback through the streets of Allston to like them.
Forget that, this was a double record release of two excellent bands. And Red City Rebels played before them and I didn’t see them because I was across the street at The Draft trying to molest drunk college girls but the bass player from the Dimwits is in this band and the Dimwits were more than awesome. They’re old drummer now hits things with sticks for the very good By The Throat, by the way. So I’m sure this band is good.
So anyways, don’t fuck with no rhinos, don’t let people walk away with your diseased beer, remember Jesus loves you but for a price and check out these bands whether your sick or not or drinking screwdrivers or not. And stay out of men’s rooms with Slimedog, especially if you’re a rhino.
